Internet has become the most popular medium for young people to search information about science and technology. How to communicate science most successfully via this medium? What are the best practices of conveying information about science and scientists to young people via internet? What kind of image do web-sites communicate about science and scientists? How to make a web-site more attractive to young people? We would kindly like to introduce you to YOSCIWEB project, which aims to search for answers to the above questions. YOSCIWEB project consortium is formed by organizations from 7 countries: Bulgaria, Estonia, France, Iceland, the Netherlands, Spain and United Kingdom. The project lasts until the end of 2009 and receives support from 7th EU Framework Program for Research and Development (Science in Society) . We intend to: * Analyse, how web-sites popularizing science build and renew the image of science and scientists among young people. * Identify innovative initiatives and new perspectives focused on producing less stereotypical images of science and technology as perceived by young people. * Create a set of best-practice cases and recommendations on most effective ways of increasing attractiveness of science and scientific careers among young people via internet. YOSCIWEB consortium will: * Examine existing research regarding science communication to young people via internet * Map the landscape of science-oriented web-sites in partner countries. * Evaluate existing scientific web-sites and determine different technical as well as content-related techniques used by these web-sites. * Conduct focus group discussions with young people from 12-18 in order to determine how young people interact with scientific web-sites. Several focus groups including young men and women from various ages and social statuses will be carried out in every participating country. * Identify the best practices of the selected websites regarding the dissemination of images of science and scientists and its impact. * Create a toolbox of tools and recommendations fostering effective science communication towards young people via internet. Outcomes of the project will be beneficial to a wide range of parties interested in science communication (e.g. webmasters, educators, museums, politicians, scientists and journalists). Please sign up at www.yosciweb.eu in order to be informed of the process and results of our research. You will receive no more than 6 newsletters during YOSCIWEB project and your e-mail will not be shared or spammed. Successful science communication can benefit greatly from international insights and best-practice cases. Please join us in our endeavour of increasing attractiveness of science for young people. With Best Regards, YOSCIWEB Consortium |
